Beware The Lebron James Fallacy

Lebron JamesI’m coining a new term today in response to what I keep seeing all over the place recently: The Lebron James Fallacy.

What is the Lebron James Fallacy?

It’s when a 16 year old kid tells you that he doesn’t need to study because he’s going to the NBA where he’ll make millions. It’s when a startup values itself at 10 million dollars because Google acquired the company next door for 100 million. It’s when the founder of Hotmail uses “ice cream glove math” (see about 3 minutes in) to overvalue his startup even before entering the market.

The Internet IS the Platform

Recently a lot of companies have been trying to make themselves into THE Platform of choice. Facebook’s Apps API, Google’s one-up OpenSocial, Netvibes universal widgets, etc. Every company wants to be the platform and control as much attention as possible.
