I agree with you about how Google loves links but really hits you hard if you enter into a grey area. Some of the sites are coming back. So maybe I am near the end of the penalty. My website was penalized by Google on May 9th. I had not really traded links to any significant degree with anyone for at least a year. My mistake was that I did not delete my useless state pages and reciprocal links in time. I deleted them around May 4th, 5 days prior to the penalty on the 9th. Great post and advice.
