Well, the downside to removing spam by using editors (as a primary method, instead of largely crowdsourcing it) is that you end up dictating the content – it becomes censorship.

Once again by saying “some users can pick out spam,” it seems to suggest that you have little faith in your users’ intelligence.

Also, since when is 50 works of art you should see before you die “news”?

Sure, some users can pick out the spam on social news sites, but isn’t better to have someone there removing it for them??!

What’s the downside to removing spam?

I’m smart enough to know what’s spam in my GMAIL, but I’d rather have Google do it for me. It’s really the same thing.

Also, Netscape is a social *news* site. The goal is to focus on *news* not funny, stupid, wacky, etc. stuff. digg has stated you can put anything up, Netscape exists as a news service–we’ve always been upfront about that.

Spelling is bullshit.

And I think Calacanis does quite a good job of stirring up controversy wherever he goes.
